The Powers of the Salien

    The Powers of the Salien would be considered "magic" by you. Salien can "work spells and charms". All Salien who "work spells" use wands to channel their power. Salien Powers are inherited, though Powers sometimes skip generations, or they are gifted to the recipients by the Heirs of Valenkina and Humelfleta. Not all Salien have all Powers, for instance only Humelfletas can change shapes ("transfigure"). The races with "Limited Powers" are the Eximia and the Pumilla. These races can use fighting spells (offensive and defensive). The Elegia have their own powers and do not work spells. All Humelfletas, regardless of race, have transforming Powers. Those Salien with "Full" Powers include the Evadamas, the Verdadamas, the Pauladamas, and the Libertusas.

     The Salien are divided into four Houses - Valenkinas, Humelfletas, Guldahartas, and Reyvensenas. The Houses were founded by members of the Dyvil and each has specific abilities. Two have specific Powers - magical abilities that only the members of the Houses have.

Valenkinas

The Valenkinas were founded by Viggo Valenkina (Valenking), one of the three Sons of Dyves. Dyves was the last and the greatest of the Ancient Kings of the Salien. Prior to his departure, he divided his powers among his sons. His eldest son, Viggo, chose the Power of Time. He and his direct descendents protect and control Time. The Power associated with this is the ability to travel through Time. Valenkinas are Time Travelers.

The ability to travel through time has been coveted by Caerth Malus since the time of Viggo. In order to protect time, Viggo encapsulated Time into a precious crystal. This crystal was passed on to his son and Heir, Caledon. The crystal has been passed in an unbroken line to each Heir. The Heir of Valenkina is the Keeper of the Crystal.

In order to facilitate the movement of all of the Salien, portals were developed. All Portals are created and maintained by the Keeper of the Crystal. They can be used by any Salien but most are limited in their scope (who can use them, where they can go, and when they can go). Only Valenkina can travel through time on their own using a horologium - a special clock. Valenkina have been limited since the time of Caledon to traveling back in time. Only the Keeper can travel forward in time.

Evadamas, Verdadamas, Pauladamas, and a few Eximia are Valenkinas. The Valenkina device (emblem) is the Rising Sun and color is Gold.

Humelfletas

The Humelfletas were founded by Horatius Humelfletas (Humelfletch), the second Son of Dyves. Horatius chose the Power of Change. His descendents are "changelings", they have the ability to change their form and they can transfigure the forms of other animate and inanimate objects.

Humelfletas  have a limited number of forms they can take. All forms are of other animals. Only the Heir of Horatius can change into other human forms. The Heir also is not limited in the number of forms they can take. The forms often reflect the "true" nature of the Humelfletas. They can change form at will. When in their changed state, they still retain their powers and personalities, though they can communicate in the language of the form they are in (for instance a Humelfletas dog can talk with other, non-Humelfletas dogs). As such, Humelfletas are very useful as spies and guardians.

Only Humelfletus can untransfigure others using the "digwedi" spell.

The Heirs of Horatius are unknown to all but the Council of the Salien.

Evadamas, Pumillas, and a few Pauladamas are Humelfletas. The Humelfletas device is the Winged Horse and the color is Silver.

Guldahartas

The Guldahartas were founded by Glinda Guldaharta. Glinda was the great-granddaughter of Viggo Valenkina. She was a fierce warrior. It was Glinda who took up Calenring's sword after he was killed by Caerth Malus during the Battle of Tigart Fields.  Under her leadership, Caerth Malus' forces were defeated and the War of the Three Powers was ended. Glinda personally fought and defeated Caerth Malus.

Guldahartas are the brave and fierce warriors of the Salien. They are particularly gifted in the fighting arts - both magical and physical.

 All Salien can be Guldahartas. The Guldaharta device is the Lion and the color is Scarlet.

Reyvensenas

The Reyvensenas were founded by Ryndella Reyvensen. Ryndella was descended from both Valenkina and Humelfleta. She founded the first Academy of the Salien and consolidated the training of the Salien. She also moved the training compound to Tigart and, with the aid of the Keeper of the Crystal, established the Tigart system of portals which have led to the extensive portal system used by modern-day Salien.

Reyvensens are gifted with knowledge. They are the historians, teachers, and councilors among the Salien. Many Elegia are Reyvensenas.

All Salien can be Reyvensenas. The Reyvensenas device is the Tree of Knowledge and the color is Green.
